Bird watching, more commonly known as birding, is a popular tourist activity in Costa Rica. The great number of bird species in this country make it a colorful, wonderful, and fascinating place to be in for bird watchers. But if you are a beginner to this kind of hobby, watching birds don't seem to make any sense. How do you know if, among the hundreds you have seen, the bird you just saw now is something you have seen before? How much do birding equipment cost?

At the crux of bird watching is the study of how birds behave and interact with their environment and with their fellow birds. This sounds like the subject of study of biologists and, honestly, ornithologists (biologists who specialize in birds) actually do this every single day of their life. Enjoying how birds interact is not an exclusive, however, and you can always appreciate their behavior and their color anytime you want.

There is a plethora of birding equipment that you can use, but for starters all you need is a pair of binoculars and a notebook. Pick a pair that has a good field of view and large-enough lens without becoming too heavy. Magnification of seven to ten times should be enough for bird watching, with 30 mm to 40 mm lens as the optimal size. Anything more powerful than this could be heavy and inconvenient for birding.

You can choose to embark on your first birding trip in Costa Rica or elsewhere, but it is advisable to start studying first in your locale. Feed the birds and observe them. Once you can identify species, see their marks, and know what type they are through their song, you are already ready to explore and see the plethora of birds beyond your home town.

Once you get the hang of it, it won't take long before you can easily identify hundreds of birds through a simple glance. Migration makes a good variety for identifying birds. A good mastery of birds' behavior will let you know immediately where they are at a certain time. You can then use the notebook in order to record your observations for reference later on.

Birding is one hobby that takes a lot of passion and time--but it's definitely something that you can impress your friends with!
